Answer to Treasure Quiz – July 4

Pink Floyd

Clue1> Adams included a direct reference to Pink Floyd in the original radio version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, in which he describes the main characters surveying the landscape of an alien planet while Marvin, their android companion, hums Pink Floyd's "Shine on You Crazy Diamond".

Clue2> Alice In WonderlandOne other interesting synchronization occurs when The Wall and the Disney version of Alice in Wonderland are played simultaneously. Certain songs, such as "The Thin Ice", "Mother", and "Run Like Hell", seem to fit the images on the screen extremely well. Interestingly, "Comfortably Numb" must be skipped in order for the synchronicity to work; there is actually a minus sign next to the song time on the back cover of the remastered CD edition of The Wall.

Clue3> NYSE - The bizarre link between Pink Floyd albums and bear markets began in June 1968 with the release of A Saucerful of Secrets. Within days the Dow Jones Industrial Average of shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange suffered a 6 per cent slump. The title of the next album, was a warning in itself: markets were already declining, but once that record was out, they went into free fall. The damage was even worse when Ummagumma came out in October 1969. The market, which had been enjoying a mild recovery, instantly dived 12 per cent and remained low for a year.
